Soleus GPS 1.0

Soleus Watches are the product of Austin based Soleus Running. David Arnold is the president of the company which established in 2008 by Arnold and David Heath. David Arnold used to design watches for Nike. Soleus watches are named after the muscle in the back part of the lower calf. This muscle is an important muscle for standing, walking and running. Without it the body would fall forward. 

The intent of the founders of Soleus watches is to focus on the needs of runners and to provide them with watches which are the most comfortable, easiest to use and above all the most accurate. One interesting feature of some of the watches is the addition of an inspirational message on the back of the watch. This is called a Squiff, an example of the type of message you would find is "Run, Race. PR.Repeat".

 Soleus watches make models for both men and women. Most of their models are sports watches and several include such features as lap memory, data storage for runs ( from one run to ten runs depending on the model ), interval timers, alarms, time and date.

If you are looking for a watch that will keep track of your distance Soleus watches produces what is possible the least expensive GPS watch on the market. The Soleus GPS 1.0 was introduced towards the end of 2011.

More about the Soleus GPS 1.0

The Soleus GPS 1.0 is similar in size to the Garmin FR610, but to my mind it is a nicer looking watch. The watch can take a bit longer than the Garmins to lock onto a satellite. It can take up to a couple minutes depending where you are and the cloud cover, although my Garmin can take just as long sometimes. This is easily rectified by switching the watch on while you are getting ready for your run. Just ensure that the watch is somewhere ( a windowsill or outside  ) where it can search for satellites.

Once the watch has locked on to a satellite or satellites it will give you a memory readout of the battery level and then the number of hours of memory left. The battery holds its charge for a relatively long period of time. A member of my running group who received one for his birthday still had 15 hours of battery remaining after using it for about 18 – 20 hours previously. 

The battery is recharged with the USB cable which is included. The cable itself clips onto the watch by way of waterproof connector clips.

Workout Data cannot be downloaded from the watch to your computer, although apparently the company is working on developing an accessory that would allow for this. Having computer upload capability would add to the price.

When setting up the watch you need to enter your body and age and gender information into the watch. It is simple to enter your weight, height and age.

The Soleus has five modes for viewing information. Each of the modes gives you the current distance and activity time. The other modes appear at the bottom of the screen and you can alternate between Clock, Calories, Pace and Speed.

The Soleus can also be used as a regular watch, especially given the charge length of the battery. The watch also has world time zones and can be set for five alarms, making it a great unit to take with you when you travel.

The Soleus also has a backlight which stays lit for approximately 14 seconds.

All in all Soleus Watches has produced a great watch in the Soleus GPS 1.0. If you are looking for a basic GPS watch which also gives you great training information at a reasonable, dare I say cheap price, the Soleus GPS 1.0 is definitely the watch to consider.

The Garmin Forerunner 210 was released by Garmin towards the end of 2010. This was an eagerly awaited new model. With the Garmin 210, Garmin decided to maintain some features which are essential to runners while at the same time eliminating some functions which were nice to have but were not absolutely necessary and only added to the price. I am referring to the training partner function and the wireless technology.

Quick Summary

Water resistance the 210 is not designed to be a swimmer's watch, but it does have a 1m water resistance rating.

The Garmin 210 has a huge number of functions and with the heart rate Monitor it can track HR, calories, distance, time, average pace, current pace, elevation, best pace

Great interval training function with alerts

Compatible with Garmin Connect so that you can upload and view all of your data including a Google map of your runs as well as everything else.

Garmin's "HotFix" Technology

Garmin has made a name for itself with their GPS systems. For runners the Garmin GPS incorporated in the Forerunner watches has become so popular that I noticed in a recent half marathon that practically the whole range of Forerunner sports watches were visible on the runners around me. With the Garmin 210 the GPS receiver has Garmin's trademarked "HotFix" technology which is available in several models now.

The beauty of "HotFix" is that it has been designed to allow the receiver to hunt, find and lock on to satellites extremely quickly. It has also been designed to maintain the connection for much longer periods of time, thereby adding to the reliability and accuracy of the running and training information.

The other great thing about the receiver technology in the 210 is it's ability to find satellites quickly. One of the members of my running group has a 210 and we tried it out in several different locations. On one run we ran through a fairly heavily forested area. We could still see sky above us and the 210 had no trouble staying locked on the satellites. We then ran down to the local high school, ran through one door into the gym and out another on the other side. The watch picked up the satellite almost immediately after we emerged from the building. The time it took to lock on was less than 10 seconds.

For anyone who runs indoors, for example our recreation centre was renovated a couple of years ago and they put in an indoor track, it is possible to purchase an optional footpod for the 210. This will look after any issues related to keeping track of distance etc. when you run inside.

Pace Functions and Intervals

Some of the other features of the 210 are particularly useful. The ones that I think are really valuable are the average pace, current pace and of course the distance and time tracking ability.

The current pace feature is a great function because you can keep an eye on it to determine whether or not you are on track to finish a run in the desired time. If not, then this function gives you the information you need to pick up the pace. The average pace function gives you your average pace from start to finish. This is a particularly useful feature if you use it consistently.

Using this information can help you to determine whether or not your fitness level is improving. A Distance and Time function is of course something that any self respecting pedometer watch or GPS watch must have. The 210 will also track you individual lap times as well.

If you are someone who incorporates interval training into your workouts you will really like the 210. You can easily set your running distance as well as the rest time between each interval. You are alerted to the fact that you have run the required distance by a beeping alarm and then it rings again to let you know that it is time to run again.

Some other other functions related to the Interval function are, the warm up length, number of intervals as well as a setting for a cool down length.

Heart rate Monitor

The Garmin 210 is available as a stand alone unit or with a Heart rate Monitor. The HR monitor has been improved a great deal. It is lighter and more comfortable to wear and fits much better. Just follow the directions for the placement of the chest strap, and the watch will quickly start to read the data from the monitor.

The Garmin 210 has a calorie counting function which is based on the information regarding your weight which you enter when you first program the watch. The watch uses this as a guide to determine from your heart rate how many calories you are expending. This is a really useful function for anyone trying to lose weight or for anyone running long distances where they may need to refuel during the run.

Similar to several other models the 210 HR monitor also has heart rate alerts. These allow you to set maximum and minimum heart rate levels and the watch will alert you anytime your heart rate is outside either range. If you are a serious runner this is a really useful function for you hard and soft training days.

Garmin Connect Compatible

Several Garmin forerunner sports watches are compatible with Garmin Connect, and the 210 is no exception. If you haven't come across Garmin Connect before then this is a feature which I am sure you will find really useful. I would imagine that it is one of  important reason that has made the these watches so popular with runners. Garmin Connect allows you to transfer your running data from the watch to Garmin connect with the USB cable. As well as helping you to keep track of all kinds of data, Garmin Connect is free. Just watch the video above to get a good review of what is it all about.

Garmin Connect uses Google maps so that after you have uploaded your data you can see exactly where you have run. This is useful if you like to vary your routes. Garmin Connect does not stop there though. When you log on to upload your most recent data you will be able to see your last workout statistics.

These include everything from distance and time, to average pace, calories expended, time, best pace and much more. These are all listed under timing and are easy to read.  It will even give you an elevation readout showing your minimum and maximum elevation as well as the elevation gain and loss.

As well as showing a map and run statistics Garmin Connect also lets you run reports. This allows you to view all of the data related to your runs over any period of time you want. it is a great function which can be used to instead of a log book to give you a host of information. You can easily keep track of total distance covered over a particular time period as well as your calories burned, time and much more.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a reasonably priced GPS watch with a huge range of "bells and whistles" that is easy to use and comfortable to wear the Garmin forerunner 210 is a sports watch to consider.

GSI Watches are another brand to consider if you are looking for a good pedometer watch or sports watch. I am not sure how well know the GSI brand is, but many of their models are receive extremely good reviews. GSI watches are a great alternative to some of the better known brands. GSI stands for Golden State International and as you might expect from the name the company started in San Francisco. having been in business since 1974, this company is know for quality, value and innovative watches. Their business involves producing watches for a few other retailers and their brand name partner "Coleman", probably the largest quality manufacturer known in the sporting goods and camping equipment marketplace. 

Pedometer watches

GSI pedometer watches are all in one, multifunctional, weatherproof, outdoor watches that are designed for exercising, training and hiking. Several models are equipped with an Altimeter ( measures height ) a Pedometer accelerometer function for step counting, speed and distance measurement. Often there is a Barometer function as well. This measures barometric pressure as a means of forecasting the type of weather you might experience.

The altitude function has an altitude range of -999 up to 9999 meters, and a history graphic display that actually counts the number of hills. Models with this feature and the barometric weather forecast are perfect for the outdoors. Usually there is also a countdown timer as well as a backlight display. All in all these models measure speed, distance, steps, temperature, altitude in addition to having a stopwatch function and alarm. These pedometer watches are ideal for any type of outdoor activity and exercise program such as walking, jogging, running and hiking. prices range around the $40.00 mark.

GSI has a running watch called the GSI Super Quality Standalone Heart rate ECG Monitor watch. This is an all in one watch for monitoring your exercise and training program. It measures pulse and calories without the heart monitor strap that some other watches require. It also has an advanced electrocardiography (ECG) technology readout, and holds a memory of the previous12 records with a time and date stamp. It also has a pacer function that counts 30 to 180 heartbeats per minute and recalls the highest and lowest heartbeat. It also has a calorie counting function so that you can monitor the number of calories burned. There is also a 1/1000 second chronograph and back light display. It is in many ways the ultimate watch and is very reasonably priced.

All In One Watches

As the name indicates, these watches are great multifunctional models. They have an Altimeter, Thermometer, Compass in addition to an Alarm and a barometric weather forecast that reads if it is sunny, cloudy or rainy. A stopwatch and auto calendar are usually part of the package as well. prices for these great all in one watches can be as low as the mid $40.00 range.

	This is the GSI Super Quality All in One waterproof exercising Monitoring System This is a watch which incorporates the ability to plug into a USB Port in order to upload exercise data to a PC. This unit has many functions . It can track calories used, steps taken, speed and distance. The speed function gives you information on your current, average and maximum speed.  It provides a 7 day record of your exercise. With the heart strap you can get your average heart rate as well as your current, minimum and maximum heart rates. These is also an alarm, date and time function CONS: This watch generally received  good Amazon reviews, but reviewers were disappointed by the fact that it was not Mac compatible. Two others were very disappointed in the quality and one claimed it was not waterproof. Rating: ★★★☆☆
	The GSI Super Quality all in One outdoor exercise data watch. This model is truly a multi functional watch for athletes and hikers. This is a weatherproof watch with the following functions: It features a pedometer, Speedometer, and Odometer for tracking steps taken, speed and distance covered. As well as counting steps it can detect average speed as well as maximum and current speeds. This watch also has the Altimeter and barometer features,with a memory and a history display. It also counts hills. This is truly a watch packed with features. Rating: ★★★★☆
	GSI Super Quality All in One water Resistant HR Monitor Watch. This another model which features several different functions. This is another all in one tool for the any one serious about training and exercising.  This unit has an auto calendar, alarm function which includes snooze feature and a back light display. You can also input your birthday, weight and height. This watch features a heart rate monitor when used with the slim transmitter chest strap.  It also has everything you would expect in a runners watch. There is an odometer for distance tracking as well as a speedometer and pedometer. Calories burned are tracked by the calorimeter. The pedometer, speedometer counts your steps taken as well as current speed and maximum and average speed. The heart rate monitoring system measures average, maximum and current heart rate. Rating: ★★★★☆

Overweight Children. The statistics are really quite frightening. It is estimated that in the USA one out of every three children is overweight. Although we know that many children are consuming more calories in the form of junk food, fast food and pop, this is not the only reason that they are putting on weight. The main contributor to children becoming overweight is a lack of exercise.

Most of us are aware that many children are spending far too much time in front of the television or computer. Many would much rather watch TV with a bag of chips or play a computer game than go outside to play. Getting children motivated to exercise is becoming more and more difficult. In South Korea the government is now contemplating passing a law which requires all children under 16 years of age to be off the internet by midnight. Many children are not only becoming overweight because of  a lack of exercise, but they are also becoming addicted to computer games. Some even become very aggressive when forced to switch off the computer.

This state of affairs is causing millions of parents a great deal of concern.  The long term effect on childrens' health and the strain that this will put on health care systems is extremely worrying.  The pressure on health care systems will effect all of us. As a parent,  what you can you do to ensure that your child manages to get enough exercise and does not become overweight?

One of the most important considerations is to set an example. If parents emphasize the importance of exercise and activitiy and particiapte in it themselves this will go a long way to encouraging their children to do the same. Rules about the amount of time allowed to watch TV or to play computer games have to be set and adhered to. The earlier in a child's life this is done , the easier it is to keep television watching and computer gaming to a reasonable schedule. Once again,  parents need to set an example, this often involves a lot of sacrifice on our part as well. After a hard day at work we want to relax, put our feet up and watch TV too. Often the best thing for us, our own health and our own weight as well as that of our children is to do something which involves some physical exercise and fun. Just going bowling for an hour is much better for us than eating chips in front of the TV.

Another important consideration if you are worried about your child's weight or if you just want to ensure that he or she keeps physically active, is enrollment in after school activites. As with so many things in life the sooner you can do this the better. Getting children into the habit of doing something on a relatively structured basis is important. It is also important to start early because if a child has already started to put on weight it becomes more difficult to lose it. We all know how difficult it can be to lose just  a few pounds, and children are no different.

Finding an after school program that a child enjoys should not be too difficult. Often the schools themselves have after school activites. If they don't offer any,  then investigating programs at the local recreation centre or community hall is often the next best bet. Children who participate in swimming and skating or any one othe many sports often on offer to children such as volleyball, badminton, basketball, baseball, running etc. will reap many other benefits besides becoming fit and keeping their weight off.

These acitivities help them with their socialization and communication skills as well as helping them to work as part of a team. As a family it is also important to do as much as possible together. if you enjoy running,  walking or cycling encourage your children to come with you. As the old saying goes " a family that plays together, stays together".  One way to get your child interested in exercising and to keep them motivated is to buy them a pedometer.  A pocket pedometer such as one of the Omron models can be kept in the pocket and will record the number of steps your child takes during the day. These can be recorded in a log on a daily basis and will encourage your child to try and increase the distance travelled each day. Anytime we can make exercise fun and exciting it will encourage our children to get off the couch.

Garmin GPS Watches

GPS watches and in particular Garmin GPS watches are incredible inventions.  By using GPS (global position satellites), a GPS watch calculates not only the distance you are covering, but also your speed. GPS watches are amazingly accurate. They tend to work best in areas that are not too built up and where there is minimal tree cover. If you run or walk inside, on a covered track, or even in a heavily built up area a GPS watch wont work as it has to be in full view of at least three or four satellites to give accurate readings. If you move into a covered area and then back out it will estimate distance. There are however, some watches which give you the best of both worlds. They come with a foot sensor so that you can run or walk inside and a few have super sensitive GPS which allows for some tree cover and workouts near high buildings. My favourite the Garmin Forerunner 305 portable Navigator has this capability. There are however a couple of new Garmins which have come out in the last part of 2010. The Garmin Forerunner 210 and 410 both have received very good reviews so far.

GPS Watches For Runners

Garmin Forerunner 610 

Rating: ★★★★½ 

The Garmin 610 Touchscreen GPS and heart Monitor, this is a new model from Garmin. This is a wonderful watch for running and cycling, it is a bit pricey but  is a good choice for the serious athlete. It features Touchscreen Technology. The Touchscreen is easy to use even with gloves. This is particularly handy when you are running in the winter.

One of the great things about this watch is that it is both Mac and PC compatible. The 610 also incorporates Virtual Racer (TM), which allows you to compete against your previous best times. Alternatively you can also compete against other results uploaded to the Garmin Connect Site (TM)

As you would expect the Garmin 610 has many great features including the ability to measure distance, calories, cadence and with the Ant+ heart rate monitor you can monitor you heart rate. The GPS is highly sensitive, this enables it to work really well in built up areas. It is able to find satellites very quickly.

Drawback: Unfortunately this model is weather resistant, which means that it is not suitable for swimmers. Triathletes will be disappointed.

Garmin Forerunner 210

Rating: ★★★★☆ 

The Garmin Forerunner 210 GPS watch. This model is available as just the GPS watch or also as a heart Rate Monitor and with a Foot Pod for indoor running. The heart rate monitor and foot pod are sold separately.

This model is a relatively recent addition to the GPS lineup from Garmin. It has received very good reviews. One of the benefits of the 210is its accuracy. This is due to the extremely sensitive receiver which features Garmin's "Hot Fix" technology. The "Hot Fix" enables the receiver to find and lock on to satellites extremely quickly. This is especially useful if you run in a built up or covered area. For indoor running there is the optional foot pod.

The 210's water resistant rating is 10M.

This is a very sophisticated tool which allows you to download data easily. All you have to do is upload your data and information to the Garmin Connect website. This enables you to analyze and store your running statistics. The heart monitor is much improved in that it is lighter and more comfortable to wear than previous designs.

Garmin Forerunner 410

Rating: ★★★★☆ 

Garmin Forerunner 410 GPS also available with a Heart rate Monitor ( sold separately ). This model replaces the Garmin Forerunner 405.

This is another great Garmin GPS sports watch. The Forerunner 410 also features the "HotFix" satellite prediction technology. This enables the receiver to quickly find and connect to satellites. As one would expect this model has accurate pace and distance tracking.

The Forerunner 410 also allows you to make your workouts as detailed as you want. There is also Virtual Partner technology, which lets you compete against a virtual partner. A great way to keep your motivation and competitiveness up. There is also Garmin Connect compatibility with this watch. The training screens show you more than 30 different types of data and information. It also incorporates a feature in the navigation which enables you to find your way back to where you began in the event that you have become lost.

Data can be transferred to your computer automatically. You can track calorie consumption and there is also an optional Garmin cadence bike sensor.

Garmin Forerunner 205

Rating: ★★★★½ 

The Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS Sports Watch. This is an extremely reasonable price for this Garmin GPS receiver. This a good running GPS device, however it does not have a heart rate monitor and it cannot connect to Garmin's wireless sensor for speed and cadence. 

The 205 does have PC connectivity  and can integrate with Training Centre software and other web based training systems. The data screens give you information on lap, pace and distance. You can also get your stats on elevation, heading, grade and calories burned.

This model also give you Garmin's Virtual partner so that you have someone other than yourself to compete against. Comes withUSB cable, CD Rom everything you need. Allin all a great multi sport watch.

Garmin Forerunner 305

Rating: ★★★★½ 

Garmin Forerunner 305. This great looking device has an extremely sensitive GPS receiver. Heart rate functions provide a range of information including lap, and average heart rate. This model also includes Training Center Software, which lets you analyze your work out data. The really nice thing about this model is that it is both Mac and PC compatible. 

This watch also gives you accurate, pace, speed and distance data. The main difference between the 305 and the 205 is the heart rate monitoring capability. This model is also compatible with a separate wireless bike speed and cadence monitor. The GPS receiver also has greater sensitivity in the 305.  With this watch you also get information calorie expenditure as well as elevation, grade and heading.

This is a really good GPS device for the price.

The Garmin Forerunner 310XT GPS Waterproof Sports Watch also available with heart monitor.

This is the device you want to get your hands on if you are a triathlete. It is one of the few GPS watches designated waterproof to 50 meters. The only drawback is that although you can wear this watch in the water it does not track your swimming data.

This is another model with precise satellite tracking capability courtesy of "HotFix" technology. The 305 tracks and records your running and cycling data and wirelessly uploads it to your computer. With this device you can easily track your pace, position and distance. It also has heart rate monitoring capability with the HR monitor which is available as an optional add on.

For runners, hikers and cyclists GPS devices are really useful and some will even give you altitude and barometer readouts as well. The more sophisticated models allow computer linking whereby you can download your route and workout information to your computer. Just like the other pedometer watches we have discussed there are numerous makes and models. Personally I like the Garmin GPS products. When it comes to GPS enabled devices, they often have heart rate monitor capability, which is usually tracked by wearing a heart rate monitor strap.

Pedometer Watches & Heart Monitor Watches

The pedometer watch has been one of the most innovative areas of technological growth in the health and fitness world for quite some time now. Thanks to computerization and computer technology you can now buy a pedometer watches with some incredible features. One can now buy models with a whole host of functions. These include, but are not restricted to heart rate monitoring, calorie counting, GPS (global positioning satellite) distance tracking, altitude tracking, body fluid loss tracking and computer linking.

Years ago we used to have simple spring levered devices which only really tracked the number of steps a person took, perhaps a stopwatch and time function and that was pretty well it.  Enter the current world of pedometer watches and you will be stunned at the fantastic integration and reporting methods available to you all from the wrist!  These can be considered to be walking or running computers. But how do you know what type is best for you?  Let's have a look at the different types on the market and we'll go from there.

I don't like using the  word basic, because when it comes to pedometer watches they are really anything but basic. In choosing one the  same considerations apply. Namely  your budget and the types of information you think will be of the most benefit to you. I like the Tech4O pedometer watches and several members of our running group use them. They have nice designs for men and women and the new accelerator models have a start up menu that guides through the process of setting up your watch. They come with a variety of features, for example the Women's Accelerator Pulse tracks, speed, distance, steps, calories and when used with a chest strap it can monitor your heart rate.

As an example of the amazing number of functions that can be packed into a very reasonably priced watch have a look at the GSI All in One Wrist Watch.

This model features an Altimeter, Barometer, Odometer  as well as a Speedometer . Tracks Total steps, current speed as well as Maximum and average speed. Altimeter provides a Graphic Display, memory provides History and counts Hills. Weatherproof, weather forecast ( Barometric ) Alarm and Backlight Display. Rating: ★★★★☆

A Pedometer watch with a separate sensor:

Some pedometer watches use a sensor which is not built into the watch. Depending on the model, the sensor can be worn on a shoe or on the waistband. It then transmits the steps taken and distance covered to the watch. This makes it easy to check, just like telling the time. One benefit of this type of pedometer watch is that it can be used inside, unlike pedometer watches which utilize GPS.  if you have been into a running store lately, especially a Nike store,  you might have seen the Nike + Sportband. These are really neat looking slim wrist gadgets which come in many different colours. They utilize a sensor which can be placed in your Nike+ ready jogging shoe in order to record distance, pace, time and calories burned while you run. It saves information about your workouts for a week. You do need a computer to install the software. Timex also has a Fitness Tracker model which uses a separate sensor.

The other big name in watches that combine heart rate monitoring with distance measurement and a whole lot more is Garmin. One of the watches that I own is the Garmin Forerunner 305 and it is quite an amazing running computer. A foot pod can also be purchased for it. Foot pods allow you to use some GPS watches indoors where you are out of range of satellites. When you go back outside you can activate the GPS sensor. The foot pod can be used inside or out to track distance. The Garmin 305 like many distance tracking watches can be hooked up to a computer so that all kinds of data related to your workouts is readily available. For example with the 305 you can get graphs of your time, heart rate, pace, distance and it even has a mapping capability. This watch like many other Garmin's is a serious fitness watch.

If you are a triathlete I recommend that you check out the Garmin's. The 310XT for example can be used to estimate distance in water. It also records all your information and data when you are riding your bike and when you are running. All of these statistics can be uploaded to your computer wirelessly. With a watch like the Garmin Forerunner 310XT you have the capability of not only keeping track of your heart rate and calories used, but also data related to body weight, body fat and body water. Omron Pedometer, Yamax Pedometer? How to chose a Pedometer.

As the member of a running group the question "what type of pedometer is best "  is one that I hear all the time. Some runners and walkers really love gadgets and enjoy trying out all of the latest technology if they can afford it.  I thought I would take a few minutes to explore the different options available to you.  The type you use will be determined by three main things, your budget, the type of activity you will be engaging in and the type of information that you feel will be most beneficial to you. Let's go over each of the different kinds of pedometer available and present the advantages of each so whether you are walking, running or hiking you can get one that is suited to you.

Accelerometer Pedometers    

I generally recommend an accelerometer, as previously discussed these are sometimes referred to as piezoelectric pedometers.  This is the mechanism which tracks how many steps you have taken. Pedometers and pedometer watches with accelerometers are more accurate and tend to stay more accurate than ones which have spring levered mechanisms. The one thing to take into account is that you do have to replace the battery more often.

Yamax – Recommended Spring Levered Pedometers

If you are looking for a pedometer do not avoid spring levered pedometers. Many people do use them, if you do buy one of these I recommend one with a coil spring mechanism. The Yamax models are my favourite as they are very accurate. I have a Yamax which I used a lot and I still take it on vacation with me. Pedometers which utilize hair spring technology may lose their accuracy after approximately one million  steps. Coil spring ones are more accurate than hair spring pedometers and they retain their accuracy for a much longer period of time. Compared to accelerometers, spring levered devices tend to be less expensive. Spring levered ones may make a clicking sound as you walk or run, accelerometers are quiet.

Years ago, I used to use a very inexpensive pedometer.  I would periodically check its calibration by walking or running over a measured distance to ensure its accuracy.  This is the same sort of thing you would do when you manually set up a pedometer for the first time. You set your stride measurement and then walk a pre measured distance to double check that you have it set correctly, usually the longer the distance the better, as this will take into account any differences in the length of your stride.  Running tracks are ideal for setting pedometers, just double check on the actual distance around the inside track. In my day they were 440 yards, some are now 400 meters. Just count your steps and divide them into the distance travelled. A simpler method is to measure out a distance on the sidewalk and use that to measure your devices accuracy.

Basic Step Pedometers

When it comes to choosing a basic pedometer there is a huge selection on the market. In its simplest form they count the number of steps a person takes. In fact you will find that even simple onesoften have several functions. As discussed above the mechanics of a pedometer can vary. If  you are only interested in buying a very basic instrument that counts steps, try to find one that has coiled spring technology. The Yamax SW-200 is an extremely good and accurate model which only counts steps. Yamax makes an SW series and a CW series. The CW series has a more heavily coated pendulum to quieten the clicks. Both the SW and CW series are very good. The higher the model number the greater the number of functions. For example the Yamax Digi -Walker  CW 700-701 has seven different functions, these include the capability  to calculate things like  distance, calories used and activity time.

This style of pedometer is usually worn on the belt or waistband. Make sure that the clip is sturdy, preferably metal. This is another reason I like the Yamax Digi-Walkers, they come with a sturdy good quality metal clips that have stoppers on them. This prevents the unit from becoming detached and lost or broken. Battery life on these models is usually around three years.

Belt pedometers come in models which are open faced, that is you can easily see the face, or they have clip covers. The choice is yours when it comes to deciding what is best for you. The benefit of having a cover is that your pedometer is protected from getting scratched and the buttons wont get pushed accidentally which could reset it. 

Pocket Pedometers

The other popular type of is the pocket pedometer. As its name suggests you can keep it in your pocket while you walk or run. These are handy because they are unobtrusive and they wont get caught up on door handles and the like. They are useful if you want to carry one at work to see how far you  walk in a day and they are also ideal if you travel. its always nice to know how far you have walked around an airport terminal while you've been waiting for a plane. Once you arrive at your destination you can keep track of how far you have walked for business or sightseeing. The fact that it is in  your pocket will also make it more difficult for someone to steal it. 

Like belt pedometers, pocket devices also come with a range of features and functions. pocket pedometers or accelerometers can be carried at different angles in the pocket. I like the features, accuracy and durability of the pocket pedometers made by  Omron. The Omron models have what they call acceleration sensors. These models have either dual or triple axis acceleration sensors which enables them to accurately count steps when they are placed horizontally or vertically.   The HJ-720ITC allows you to track steps, distance and calories and fat grams burned. This model can be attached to your computer so that you can upload your information, enabling you to save your exercise data for years.

Pedometers for kids, and keeping track of the steps they have taken has long been a good way to encourage children to get outside and do more exercise. Now there is a really fun pedometer for kids called the Geopalz Activity Tracker. These great pedometers come in more than twenty different models. They are designed for girls and boys and include such things as a model with a butterfly, one with a skull and skateboards and a soccer ball plus many more.

The site itself is very user friendly with colourful fun graphics and interesting statistics such as the distance the average person will walk in a lifetime.

The whole Geoplaz system seems to have been carefully thought out. This is a program which should really encourage kids to take a break from the TV and computer games and get some exercise.It would not be surprising to see the Geoplaz, these pedometers for kids, becoming a bit of a fashion statement. If you are like me you love running accessories. Whether you are a walker or a runner the number and variety of exercise accessories including running clothing, gear and gadgets is almost never ending. As a runner I believe that the three most important accessories in order of importance are your running shoes, comfortable and breathable weather related clothing and of course either a pedometer or pedometer watch. If you are a walker the essentials would be the same. Beyond these necessities though there are any number of accessories, some of which can be vitally important to have, and others which you could probably do without but are either fun or stylish or both.

Running Shoes

If you are new to running or walking for exercise and fitness your feet are the most important part of the equation. As I am sure you are aware there are several  extremely well known and respected brands on the market. Brands such as Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Asics,  Brooks, Reebok, Mizuno, Puma and Saucony. In the beginning it can be quite difficult to decide which brand and model of shoe is best for you.

There are several factors which you have to consider when choosing a shoe. Things such as your weight, foot width, whether or not you pronate or supinate, whether you are going to be running or walking ( hiking) are just a few considerations. Buying the wrong shoe can cause all kinds of foot, knee and leg problems. Sometimes these can be severe enough to sideline you from walking and running for some time.  

My recommendation for choosing a running or walking shoe is to go to a reputable sports store. Try to find one that specializes in shoes and where the staff are familiar with the brands and models they sell and where they will spend time asking you questions and advising you on the shoes you should buy. Once you have decided on a make and model of shoes and you have used them and like them stay with them. Sometimes the model you like will be discontinued, your shoe store should be able to advise you on a replacement.

When it comes to running or walking, the socks you wear can be almost as important as finding a good pair of shoes. Believe it or not there are many different types of socks for athletes and these have been developed and improved upon over the years. The right pair of socks will go a long way towards giving your feet cushioning and comfort. They can also help you to avoid or minimize a number of different foot related problems, such as blisters and calluses. There are also socks which will help to protect your feet whether you run in cold weather or hot. Because running and walking conditions change there are several different makes and types of sock which have been developed to work best in certain conditions. Safety Accessories for Walking and Running

As you can imagine there are numerous running accessories. One of the most important aspects of running is your personal safety. A few years ago I was hit by a car while I was out for an early morning run. It was about 6 am in February and still dark. I was hit crossing a road, the driver did not see me because the reflector tape on my jacket was in the front and back and not on the sides. Luckily I was not badly injured as the car was not going fast and I was able to get onto the hood before I sustained too much damage. I was definately shaken up though.

As well as making sure that you are visible to motorists, there are other running safety accessories that you might want to consider. Our streets are becoming more dangerous and i always think it a good idea to have some sort of personal alarm with you. The other danger which I face on occaision are dogs. While I have only been bitten once, I have certainly had a few close calls. It is a good idea  to carry some sort of dog deterrent with you.

I find that this is a really good idea if you want to change your route and are unfamiliar with the area through which you are running. This is also true if you are travelling or on vaction and are running or walking in a strange place. Below are a few of my suggestions for accessories which will hopefully assist you in being safe while you exercise outside.

Hydration Fuel Belts

One important piece of equipment to have whether you are a walker or a runner is a hydration fuel belt. Having water or an electrolyte replacement with you is especially essential when the weather is hot and if you are exercising for a long period of time. Often I will see runners jogging along clutching a plastic water bottle. You don't need to do that and it makes running or walking awkward. Depending on your needs you can find fuel belts which will hold from one to six bottles. The FuelBelt Helium is one of the best on the market. They are available with a variety of different size belts in different colors. Make sure you choose the correct size belt.

I find that in the summer I am prone to chafing. This is particularly true after a really long run. There are a number of anti-chafing products available. I have featured a couple of my favourite ones below.
